New Year Resolutions ?

four quadrants illustrating new year resolutions

New Year Resolutions

The start of the year is traditionally a great time for re-thinking about New Year Resolutions.  It is a time for thinking again about what works & what doesn’t & being able to start afresh.  It doesn’t have to be a new year though to give yourself a kick start – the new year is a bit of a cliché.  You can start again any day!

The big question is… is what you are doing now giving you the income you want & the happiness & fulfilment you seek?  If not here are some ideas…

My best tip is don’t try & reinvent the wheel!

I get offered some crazy money making ideas; every one of them is supposed to be truly the way to make a huge amount of money, especially online.

Not everyone online can be a Facebook star or a Youtube wonder.  You can be financially successful though, in a slightly smaller way, by following a proven business model.  Then, when you have more money, you can improve on your channels & use leverage to scale it up.

Affiliate marketing is a proven business model, but some of the models promoted within the industry are extremely flawed.  I am writing a course on this subject using only strategies that do actually create an income. I’ll let you know when it’s ready for launch.  If you would like to know more more just drop me a line here

Many online marketers say “the money is in the list”.

The really big affiliate marketers all have huge mailing lists & because of that they don’t have to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars per month on advertising.  They just tell the hundreds & thousands of people on their list what they are currently interested in & they buy!

Your list is your customer base made up of people who know, like & trust you [otherwise they would unsubscribe]

So… promoting someone else’s product & building your email list are two good ways to start earning money.

I use Aweber which is great & offers a 30 day free trial account for all new customers.

The Four Quadrants:

One way to get your head into gear for a new start, a great read is the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.    Covey explains the quadrants saying that every activity we do during the day will fit into one of the four quadrants:

  • I – Urgent Important are those deadline driven projects & the stuff that must be done
  • II – Not Urgent Important are the things like building your business, planning, forming relationships, exercising etc
  • II – Urgent Not Important are some tasks, phone calls, reports, emails & interruptions
  • IV – Not Urgent Not Important are where many people get stuck & procrastinate; ‘busy work’, trivia & time-wasting activities.

I can’t remember who said “don’t start the day until the list is finished” – it is really good advice.  Write a list first thing in the morning & be acutely aware which quadrant each item is in.

The main thing is to keep going, never mind new year resolutions – do a bit every day towards your long term goals.

Because the cost of starting an Internet business is low compared to a regular business, most new Internet marketers don’t take it as seriously as they need to.  If you want your business to succeed you need to take it seriously.  I know someone who rented an office he couldn’t afford to make sure he got out of the house & actually did some work!

A blog can be started for the price of a domain name but keep at it & you can earn good money.

Success is an attitude…

The biggest hindrance is you!  The unsuccessful person blames … the economy, the tax man, the mortgage rate, lack of their partner’s support etc .  The successful person accepts that failure happens occasionally and learns from it.

No amount of coaching or training will help unless you take responsibility for your own attitude… that’s why I love working with people who are motivated.

What is your biggest hindrance?
